You don't need to test all groups of kids - just the kids that are left behind. That's how you raise achievement.

Matthews needs to push his tail out of the way.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-762201600804179432.post-35106866573327987282010-06-25T06:57:28.299-07:002010-06-25T06:57:28.299-07:00This is one of your most powerful articles, Laurie...This is one of your most powerful articles, Laurie. It should be sent across the country to the national media.

Of special importance, it should be sent to Jay Mathews of the Washington Post. He is the one who designed a program that measures the worth of a school by its enrollment numbers of AP students (regardless of student ability). That scale is now used by a major magazine to show "top" schools. We know that is a joke, but there are those who insist it's a good measuring stick and one must wonder how they can twist the truth so easily.

What we need for traditional education is a leader with a gift of language and passion that capture the media's heart--and thus its long-term attention.

I know I harp on what a warrior John Saxon was for traditional math, but he truly saw himself as being on a passionate mission to save children in American math education from the fuzzy leaders who controlled it. He was willing to take on the fight at every level and was invigorated by the battles, rather than being worn down by them. The media LOVED him over a 15-year period because of his combative nature and diehard determination.

This kind of individual comes along once in a lifetime, however, just as we saw with Martin Luther King, Jr., and many of our Founding Fathers. We could surely use one in math education right now.niki hayesnoreply@blogger.com
